The war is over, the seas perilous, egos fragile, prophesies unkind, and in Mycenae Clytemnestra plots revenge. Atherton, who won Earphones Awards for the previous books, again demonstrates exquisite timing that reinforces the drama. She also creates memorable, often haunting, character portraits using a range of British regional accents that illuminate background and personality. Cassandra's imperious upper-crust tones, the hardy resolve of Ritsa's northern English rhythms, the sweetness of her lover's Welsh--I will miss hearing them all. A.C.S. Agamemnon also has a troubled mind—he sacrificed his own daughter, Iphigenia, to assure victory at Troy, and now he sees her ghost on the ship.
