Walters (In the Studio with Angela Walters) is the go-to machine quilter for some of the best-known names in modern quilting, and for good reason--she has a knack for matching the design of the quilting with the design of the piecing. Her latest book builds on her earlier work, demonstrating some of her favorite designs to use in common geometric shapes. Each section focuses on a particular shape (squares, triangles, circles, diamonds, hexagons) or area of a quilt (negative space, borders), allowing quilters to find the shape they need to match and choose the design that works best. Each free-motion quilt design includes diagrams that illustrate each step, as well as variations on the basic design. Walters also shares a variety of tips and tricks for choosing the right design, and for machine quilting in general. VERDICT Walters is a big name in machine quilting, and her titles go beyond the typical "design catalog" approach, getting into the hows and whys of machine quilting. Beginners should start with her first book, Free-Motion Quilting with Angela Walters, which gives a strong grounding in the basics; this new work is most appropriate for those who know their way around free-motion quilting and are ready to take on new challenges.
