Mia Jenrow has always known she's destined to be a professional ballerina. In fact, it’s in her blood—according to family legend, her too-many-greats-to-count-grandmother once danced for the Paris Opera and was painted by Degas himself! Her parents say it’s just a fantasy, but to Mia it’s so much more than that. It’s her fate.
Mia is planning to spend a magical summer in France pursuing her dream, but as she pirou-ettes into Paris, she soon realizes it may be a bit more complicated than she hoped. For starters, there’s her rival, Audrey, who will stop at nothing to show her up. There’s her ballet instructor, whose impossibly high standards push her to the breaking point. And then . . . there’s Louis. Devastatingly, distractingly charming Louis. He’s eager to show Mia his city—and Mia is more than happy to hop on his Vespa and wrap her arms around him as they pass the gleaming lights of the Eiffel Tower.
Mia’s summer was supposed to be about ballet—but there’s a reason Paris is called the City of Love. . . .

Gr 7 Up-Mia is a talented 16-year-old ballerina with big dreams of winning an audition with the American Ballet Theatre. She's just arrived in Paris for a competitive six-week ballet program. Her roommate is a dancer she knows from America and soon the two earn top spots in the program's production of Swan Lake. Mia is a very serious dancer, but she quickly gets swept away in a romance with Louis, a charming French boy who happens to also be the son of her demanding ballet teacher. The two also get entangled in an art mystery connected with Mia's family history that connects Degas, ballet, and Mia's grandmother. The setting is the strongest part of this YA romance. Paris simply shines; readers' senses will come alive with all the city has to offer. French words are woven into the text seamlessly. The romance and ballet drama is predictable, but most readers probably won't mind. VERDICT A Paris-set romance recommended for most middle school libraries.-Laura Gardner, Dartmouth M.S., MA

American Mia's summer in Paris is supposed to be entirely focused on ballet, but a cute French boy and a family mystery vie for her attention. A prestigious six-week ballet program is 17-year-old Mia's opportunity to be noticed by a professional ballet company, especially after she lands an important role in Swan Lake. When she meets Louis, she doesn't intend to let him distract her from her goals, no matter how charming he is, yet she continually finds herself spending time with him. He helps her seek out the true story behind family lore regarding a ballerina ancestor and opens her eyes to the beauty of Paris. As the program's end draws nearer, Mia reevaluates her priorities and aspirations. Straightforward writing suits this sweet romance while French words peppered in add to the strong sense of place. While most of the characters lack depth, the city of Paris feels like a character itself that outshines them all. Accurate details and inclusion of several Parisian landmarks make the city come alive. Additionally, the world of ballet jets off the page with descriptions that allow readers to picture the movements and understand the difficulty and dedication needed. Last-minute twists turn the plot unduly messy, but the ending reinforces the overall light, upbeat tone. Mia and Louis are implied White; there is some diversity in secondary characters. Francophiles searching for a breezy love story will find this book trs amusant. (Romance. 12-17)COPYRIGHT(2021) Kirkus Reviews, ALL RIGHTS RESERVED.
