Iris Marlow can't die. For years, she was tormented by her missing memories and desperate to learn her real identity. So when the mysterious Adam Temple offered to reveal the truth of who she was in exchange for her joining his team in the Tournament of Freaks, a gruesome magical competition, it was an offer she couldn't refuse. But the truth would have been better left buried.
Because Adam is a member of the Enlightenment Committee, an elite secret society built upon one fundamental idea: that the apocalypse known as Hiva had destroyed the world before and would do it again, and soon. But what the Committee—and Iris—never guessed is that Hiva is not an event. Hiva is a person...Iris.
Now, no matter how hard Iris fights for a normal life, the newly awakened power inside her keeps drawing her toward the path of global annihilation. Adam, perversely obsessed with Iris, will stop at nothing to force her to unlock her true potential, while a terrifying newcomer with ties to Hiva's past is on the hunt for Iris.
All Iris wants is the freedom to choose her own future, but the cost might be everything Iris holds dear—including the world itself.

After discovering her true identity, a young Black woman brought to England by a slave trader must contend with the responsibilities of possessing the power to forge her future. This sequel to Bones of Ruin (2021) begins in 1884 London with an unsettled Iris trying to gather information regarding her newly discovered identity as a Hiva--an immortal, all-powerful being capable of destroying worlds. The alternating third-person narration brings in wealthy White Adam's detached and calculating perspective as he attempts to salvage his ruined plans and make Iris into his tool. Readers also meet Fables, a White-passing biracial man in Oklahoma, who follows a different Hiva. The information Iris seeks sets her on a far-reaching journey across Paris, the open seas, the Kingdom of Dahomey, and the site of an ancient civilization. Along the way, she must continually reconcile with her deepest desire to live in peace (with or without her powers) or succumb to what everyone believes is her ultimate purpose. Iris' plight brings together a diverse range of characters old and new, culminating in a shocking cliffhanger that will have readers looking forward to the trilogy's conclusion. The straightforward writing examines the intersection of race and gender and how they can affect power as Iris battles influences from every direction. While there are plenty of action-packed scenes and detailed descriptions of deaths, some readers may struggle with the narrative's repetitive nature. Despite its length, a largely thrilling read. Gr 8 Up-Iris was brought to England by a slave trader and spent most of The Bones of Ruin trying to reclaim her lost memories-now she has them, and wishes they had stayed buried. Armed with apocalyptic powers that are stretching beyond her control, Iris must decide how she wishes to use them before other entities find ways to use her. Iris journeys to Africa to discover the truth about her destiny. Raughley's candid writing discusses slavery, colonialism, gender, and their intersections while delivering strong character arcs and a gripping adventure plot. It runs long for such a straightforward plot. VERDICT A unique historical fantasy rich in adventure, recommended for general purchase.
